“Morning Mac,” I say as I enter the horse barn.

“Mornin’ City Boy. Runnin’ a bit behind this morning. I hope Allison’s okay after yesterday. Man, she darn took twenty years off ma life with that run. Even Mavis has slept like she’s never slept before. I don’t know what got inta her ter take off like that.”

“I just went to see Allison, she’s not great, but she’ll be fine. Thanks for letting me know about what happened.”

“Course I let yer know. Yer the boss ain’t ya?”

“Yeah, well, that may be so, but I know we’ve been at odds about her and I just want to let you know I’m making it right. I’ve had time to think and what with you and Trisha and even Johnny weighing in on my behavior, it’s made me see what a self-absorbed jerk I’ve been.”

“Ah, City Boy. You were hurtin’, but I’m glad yer seen the light. That gal doesn’t have a lyin’ bone in her body. She’s here fer the right reasons, I know it. Now ‘nuff of this feelins shit, grab a shovel and get muckin’.”

I laugh at Mac’s sudden end to our conversation and do as the man says.

I get muckin’.
